Opening of the Judicial Year at the Supreme Court of Canada

OTTAWA, September 25, 2025 – As part of its 150th anniversary commemorations, the Supreme Court of Canada will host a ceremony in the Courtroom to mark the opening of the judicial year at 10:00 am on October 6, 2025. This occasion will be the first such ceremony at the Supreme Court since the mid-1980s.

The ceremony will be presided by the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada, and will include current and former members of the Court.

Guest speakers will be: the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; Dean Kristen Boon, President of the Council of Canadian Law Deans; Bianca Kratt, President of the Canadian Bar Association; Teresa Donnelly, President of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada; and Hilary Book, President of The Advocates’ Society.

There will be limited seating available for journalists wishing to attend the ceremony in person. Seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Video and still photography will be pooled. Media can also watch remotely via the Court’s live webcast.
