Court’s visit to Winnipeg

On September 23 - 27, 2019, the Supreme Court of Canada visited Winnipeg to hear two appeals and meet with Manitobans and various communities. It was the first time in history the Court sat outside of Ottawa. It was a large public event open to everyone, with all nine judges attending.


The Supreme Court of Canada visited Winnipeg to hear two appeals and meet with Manitobans. It is part of the Court’s continued commitment to increasing access to justice, and it was the first time in history that the Court sat outside of Ottawa.

  • Reception hosted by Mayor of Winnipeg (late afternoon)

  • Hearing: R. v. K.G.K. (9:30 a.m. to approximately noon) – open to the public
  • Meet the Judges (3 p.m.) – open to the public
  • Dinner with Canadian appeal court judges (evening)

Thursday, September 26, 2019

  • Hearing: Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique v. British Columbia (9 a.m. to approximately noon and 2:15 p.m. until sometime in the afternoon) – open to the public
  • Sacred Eagle Feather gifting and presentation (1 p.m.)
  • Reception and dinner with members of the Manitoba legal community (evening)

Friday, September 27, 2019

  • Chief Justice meets with Executive members of the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba Bar Association (morning)
  • SCC judges meet with the First Nations community: Grand Chief Dumas of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (9:15 a.m.)
  • SCC judges meet with the francophone community (10:45 a.m.)
  • SCC judges meet with the Métis community: David Chartrand, President of the Manitoba Métis Federation and the 22 members of his caucus (12:05 p.m.)
  • SCC judges meet with University of Manitoba law students (afternoon)
